How To Rediscover Yourself:19 Best Ways
What does it mean to rediscover yourself?
Carl Jung
The privilege of a lifetime is to become who you truly are.
We can all have that feeling from time to time of being lost. It can start as a single thought one day, and before you know it, you are stuck in a mindset of depression, negativity and feeling that you have totally lost your way in life.
It can appear out of the blue or can creep up, a niggle here, a doubt there. Whichever way it shows up, it can leave you feeling paralysed with doubt, fear and indecision, almost trapped in your own life.
But the good news…yes, there is good news; this can sometimes be a sign from your mind that you need to make changes, and it can be the wake-up call to start moving forward in your life with positivity and purpose.
I understand where you are coming from because I felt like this a few years ago… adrift in my own life, like I had lost my purpose, my reason and I was unsure of which direction to go in…I didn’t know what I wanted I just knew I wanted something more, something different and I needed to rediscover the person who I had been before I felt like this.
And so I embarked on a journey to rediscover myself, to fall back in love with my life, to find my purpose and push myself forward in new, exciting ways that stretched and challenged me.
How do I rediscover myself again?
This process requires patience and self-compassion, allowing you to rebuild your identity based on your genuine desires and strengths.
If you are at a stage in your life where you are feeling lost, then you will no doubt have gone back and forth as to what to do. To rediscover yourself, you will need to start some deep reflection on your life.
What are your core values?
What are your passions?
What experiences have you had that you would like to develop?
Set aside some time and explore what makes you feel fulfilled and true to yourself. This can be done by either meditating, journaling or trying new activities that take you out of your comfort zone.
Remove limiting beliefs and ways you have thought about yourself, and become curious about who you are today.
You aren’t going to rediscover yourself overnight; this process takes time and effort, but with patience and self-compassion, you will be able to rebuild your identity based on your genuine desires and strengths.
19 Best Ways
1. Spend time alone for self-reflection.
As uncomfortable as it may be at times, spending time alone is needed to discover yourself. This time will allow you to disconnect from external influences and distractions in your life. This will then give you clarity about your beliefs and values, your desires and dreams.
Taking time in quiet reflection allows you to be honest and to identify patterns, strengths and areas you would like to grow.
2. Explore new hobbies and interests.
Have you ever had the notion that you would like to try something new, but you have never been brave enough to try? Now is the time to. Exploring new hobbies and interests is a powerful way to ignite new passions and boost personal growth, and rediscover a bit more about yourself along the way.
Engaging in activities outside your usual routine allows you to uncover hidden passions, develop new skills, and gain fresh perspectives. By stepping into unfamiliar territory, you open doors to self-discovery and create opportunities to build a life aligned with your desires and values.
3. Journal thoughts and feelings regularly
This is a tip I made great use of when I was on my journey of rediscovery. Journaling allows you to get down on paper all of your deepest thoughts and feelings and then enables you to start seeing patterns as to why you think and behave the way you do.
Journaling allows you the space to gain some clarity on your inner world.
By putting your emotions into words, you create a safe space for self-reflection and deeper understanding of your desires, fears, and patterns.
This practice helped me uncover hidden beliefs and values that enabled me to shape my future decisions.
Over time, consistent journaling can reveal progress, shifts in mindset, and new perspectives, making it an essential tool for personal growth and transformation.
4. Travel solo to gain new perspectives.
Does the thought of travelling solo daunt you? If so, you aren’t alone, but it is also a great way to rediscover yourself and gain valuable new insights and perspectives in your world.
Through solo travel, you cultivate confidence, independence, and self-awareness, all essential tools for personal growth and transformation. You won’t have the influence of other people around you, offering their advice and opinions, which sometimes aren’t needed or wanted!
It allows you to step outside of your usual environment and discover things about yourself you would never know otherwise.
5. Practice mindfulness to stay present.
Practising mindfulness helps you stay in the present moment, allowing you to become more aware of your thoughts, feelings, and surroundings without any negative thinking or judgment.
By focusing on the here and now, you create a place to observe patterns and habits that may have been unconscious, allowing you to rediscover your true self.
This intentional awareness builds clarity and calm, helping you make choices aligned with your values and goals.
This is another tool I found particularly helpful as it releases rumination of negative thoughts and releases stress.
6. Seek guidance from a life coach.
I understand the value I give my clients who come to me to rediscover themselves. Coaching offers you a safe space to explore who you are and who you want to be.
You will receive the tools needed to make significant changes in your life while also receiving support and accountability to implement those changes.
Coaching isn’t about judging and giving you advice, it is about allowing you to explore who you are and to rediscover who you want to be, whilst also pushing yourself to live a bigger, more fulfilling life.
7. Read books that inspire growth.
Reading books that inspire growth can be an excellent way to rediscover yourself. These books offer new perspectives, challenge limiting beliefs, and provide practical tools for personal development.
As you immerse yourself in stories of transformation and insights from influential leaders in growth areas, you enable self-reflection and renewed motivation. This process can help you reconnect with your passions, values, and goals, ultimately guiding you toward a more authentic and fulfilling life.
8. Set meaningful personal goals.
Setting meaningful personal goals is one of the first steps toward rediscovering yourself.
By identifying what truly matters to you, whether it's improving your well-being, developing new skills, or deepening relationships, you create a clear path that aligns with your values and desires.
These goals serve as a compass, helping you to focus your energy and make intentional choices that build growth and self-awareness.
As you work toward your objectives, you'll gain insight into your strengths and passions, ultimately leading to a renewed sense of purpose and confidence in your journey.
This is one of the areas coaching sessions will dive into to give you a clear plan of the goals you want to achieve and how to go about them.
9. Declutter your environment for clarity.
If you have a cluttered environment, you may find yourself struggling to get clarity in your life. Spending time decluttering your home and personal space can be a cathartic and stimulating experience.
When you get rid of stuff, it frees up space physically and emotionally. All the things you have been clinging to? Do you need them? Can you release them from your world to enable you to grow and develop?
You can rediscover so much about yourself from this exercise.
10. Reconnect with old, meaningful friends.
Reconnecting with old, meaningful friends can be a powerful way to rediscover yourself, as these relationships often reflect who you were at different points in your life.
Revisiting shared memories and conversations with friends who knew you before life’s many changes can help you gain clarity on your true values, passions, and strengths. These connections provide a safe space to reflect on your personal growth and remind you of the qualities that have always defined you.
By opening up to trusted friends from your past, you create opportunities for renewed support, honest feedback, and inspiration, all of which can guide you toward a clearer vision of who you are.
11. Change daily routines and habits.
Have you found yourself stuck in a rut? Doing the same things day in and day out? When you change your daily routines and habits, you will discover so much more about yourself.
Look at each day and how you can start to make changes. Are you enjoying the way you spend time, or are you afraid to make adjustments? Mixing life up can help you rediscover so much about yourself. It can help to get you out of a rut and more interested in your life again.
It can open up many opportunities and experiences and give you an entirely new perspective on your life.
12. Volunteer to find a deeper purpose.
If you are searching for different ways to rediscover yourself, volunteering could be what you are looking for.
This offers a unique opportunity to find a deeper purpose and rediscover yourself by stepping outside of your everyday routine and engaging with others in meaningful ways.
Volunteering allows you to connect with different communities, gain new perspectives, and develop skills that reveal strengths and passions you may not have recognised before.
Through the act of giving your time and energy, you create a sense of fulfilment and clarity that can guide you toward a more authentic and purposeful life.
13. Attend workshops for new skills and self-discovery.
If you feel lost, lack purpose and don’t recognise yourself anymore, then attending workshops for new skills could be the answer. It is all too easy to stay stuck in a rut and not push yourself out of your comfort zone, but that’s the challenge here.
Get involved in something different. Try something new, push yourself in ways you never have before, and you could discover hidden talents and dreams you never knew existed.
14. Practice gratitude daily.
Practising gratitude daily allows you to rediscover yourself by shifting your focus from what is lacking to what is abundant in your life. This simple yet powerful habit helps you become more aware of the positive aspects within and around you, meaning you can develop a deeper connection with your true values and strengths.
By regularly acknowledging and appreciating your experiences, achievements, and relationships, you cultivate a mindset of contentment and self-awareness.
This process not only enhances emotional well-being but also encourages personal growth, guiding you to live more intentionally and authentically.
15. Explore your spiritual side.
Exploring your spiritual side can be a powerful way to rediscover yourself and gain deeper insight into your true values and purpose.
By connecting with your inner beliefs, meditating, or practising mindfulness, you create space to reflect on what truly matters beyond daily distractions.
This practice encourages self-awareness, inner peace, and a renewed sense of direction, helping you align your life with your true self.
Embracing this exploration can lead to profound personal growth and a clearer understanding of your unique path.
16. Limit social media use.
Avoiding social media can be a powerful step toward rediscovering yourself, as it allows you to disconnect from external influences and constant comparisons. Without the distractions of curated feeds and endless notifications, you create space to reflect on your true thoughts, values, and desires.
This intentional break helps you focus on you, your desires and interests.
How many times have you watched something on social media and been swept into a spiral of negativity because your life doesn’t seem to match up? Switching off and living your life on your terms is freeing.
17. Care for your body daily.
If you want to rediscover your true self, start taking care of yourself daily. When you prioritise activities such as nourishing your body with wholesome foods, engaging in regular physical movement, and allowing time for rest, you create a foundation for mental clarity and emotional balance.
This consistent self-care routine helps you reconnect with your inner needs and strengths, building a deeper sense of self-awareness and confidence. By honouring your body’s signals and treating it with kindness, you open the door to personal growth and a renewed understanding of who you are.
18. Learn new skills regularly.
Learning should be a lifelong habit, not something that stops when you leave school. Constant learning through life will help you discover so much about yourself.
You are an organic being; you will grow and flourish by what you feed yourself. Learning is the food to help you grow in ways you may never have imagined before.
19. Express creativity through art or writing.
Expressing creativity through art or writing unlocks inner thoughts and emotions that often remain hidden.
This process allows you to explore your identity beyond everyday roles and expectations, allowing for self-reflection and personal growth.
Whether through painting, drawing, journaling, or storytelling, creative expression can clarify your values, inspire new perspectives, and build confidence in your unique voice.
Engaging in this practice regularly nurtures a deeper connection with your true self and promotes healing and transformation.
